Bye Bye Summer

Summer is freedom of hopping out of routine without the consequences of sending your exhausted child into the front doors of school. Parents, just as much as children love the ease of summer schedules, staying up late, sleepovers, no bath time because you went swimming, vacations, and the relaxation of being unscheduled.

In just a few days, parents are dreading the alarm followed by the “hurry up” phrases that deme our morning routine. Let’s admit it, we all have them.

“Hurry up and get dressed.”

“Hurry up and eat breakfast.”

“Hurry up and get in the car.”

“We are going to be L-A-T-E!”

As you plan your last few days of summer, stop. Breathe. Slow down. Relish in the nighttime sounds of cicadas, the flashing of the lightening bugs and the rustle as the pool closes for the season.

The laziness of summer is coming to coming to an end……back to school is near…….and before we know it, we are back to routine.

Can I Be Big in NYC?

June 2, 2017

The big day...releasing my book, Hey Mom Can I Be Big, in NYC! I woke up early with my throat and nose clogged. Head was heavy. COME ON???? This was the biggest day of my literary life thus far and I felt horrible. But the show must go on so I got ready hoping I didn’t look as bad as I felt. Wearing my Hey Mom Chucks, I grabbed an authentic NY bagel then headed to the Javitts Center.  I had my cute high heels in my bag. I took one look at them and thought...nope...I am wearing my new Chucks for this experience!  I ran by my publisher's booth for a pep talk and then headed for the green room. My head still didn’t feel great and now the nerves set in...

I found my signing booth, Booth #12. I had about a million butterflies in my stomach. What if no one is out there? I peaked out from behind the curtain…and there was a line! LET’S DO THIS! Next thing I knew I was being shuffled from behind the curtain and they said, you are on! I jumped on the stool, grabbed a pen and smiled at the first lady who came up. All of that anxiety and fear washed away. I was sitting at a booth with people coming at me, so happy that I was signing MY book for THEM...in NYC at the biggest book show in the world. I told THEM, thank you! They didn't understand that they had help to make my dream come true! A dream I have had since I was a child!

I was on a high at that point. Stuffy head forgotten. I still had on my Chucks, so I was practically skipping through the Expo. I had another awesome book signing at the StoryBook Genius Publishing booth. I loved talking about who the book was based on and hearing stories from other parents who hear, HEY MOM!,  just as much as I do! Connecting with readers is an amazing experience. The NYC release of, Hey Mom Can I Be Big! , was a success. Now I get to be a fan and explore the show...

Neil Patrick Harris, Lemony Snicket, and Chris Harris were having an open forum downstairs…YES! I headed down there and got a seat. They all had new books coming out. Neil Patrick Harris had top hats advertising his book for everyone in the audience. I grabbed one and was determined to get it home to Kel. He would LOVE it. They all had book signings right after, so I immediately went upstairs to get in line for Lemony Snicket ( you had to have tickets for NPH). I finally got to the front of the line and someone came up and said, uhh, this woman has a “first to the line ticket”. My annoyance shows…..this face…lol. BUT, the first thing Lemony Snicket said was “line cutter!”. Well, I just played off that, and we went to town. The poor woman. LS and I obviously had a similar personality and well, poor, her…lol I assured her that I was only kidding…seriously.. sorta. So after she practically runs away from us, it is my turn. I look at LS and said, take the weirdest pic you can…and three of the funniest pictures came from that encounter. We bantered for several minutes and the people behind me started to get restless. Well, his buddy, Chris Harris, who also has a book out (he was a writer and producer on How I Met Your Mother with NPH) was a few lanes over and I wanted his book. I headed over there and showed him the pics with LS. I asked him, can you do better???? AND HE DELIVERED. We had a hilarious pic.

Olivia the Pig and Dr. Ruth?

June 1, 2017

I woke up at the crack of dawn again for no reason. No alarm, just excitement! Today was another bucket list item—take a morning jog in Central Park. I just wondered the park, looking and thinking I could have been in the parks back home if I hadn’t looked over the treetops and saw skyscrapers. It was a perfect spring morning. I came up on a gentleman that played the most beautiful version of “All of Me” by John Legend on his guitar. I took pics of things I had only seen on tv and in movies. I found a secluded little area by the lake and sat looking at the scenery, letting it soak in. I was in Central Park! Even though I could have sat there for hours, I had to get back. Books Expo 2017 was beginning!

First day of Book Expo 2017. I was warned beforehand that this place was huge and jam packed with more books than anyone could imagine. A book lovers dream! As I am going up the escalators to the floor, I felt the energy taking hold again. WOW, it was huge. All the biggest publishing houses were there from all over the globe. Book Expo is the biggest book event in the WORLD and I am here with MY book. WHAT??? I stopped by the SBG booth and it looked amazing! The SBG Team has worked so hard for so many months to get this to fruition. Authors were lined up in booths to give out their book and sign autographs. I saw Maria Shriver and Gabrielle Union, all signing their new books. Oh, and don’t forget my pic with Olivia the Pig! She was the “biggest” star there! I was still roaming when I saw this tiny little person taking a pic with someone. I looked closer and it was DR. RUTH! I hung out a minute and asked if she would take a picture with me. She smiled and said, of course! I had high shoes on, but at 5’3”, I towered over her!!!! And I gave HER a little advice…wink. wink.

That evening, Storybook Genius Publishing hosted an amazing dinner at a quaint little Italian Restaurant. We had a wonderful dinner, drinks, and I finally got to meet my fellow SBG authors. Best thing is the Sole Sisters had made me custom Hey Mom Chucks and had then sent to NYC so I could wear them there. I got them that night, put them on immediately and didn’t take them off the rest of the time I was in NYC.

Great time, but oddly, I started feeling physically really bad. My throat was closing up and my nose was clogged. Great. The night before my big day, I was getting sick. I just got more miserable as the night went on. I tried to be myself, but it was a struggle. I got back to the hotel, made my nightly TS (Times Square) stroll and crashed…I had to be at my booth at 9 a.m. This was it. MY TIME. - Cari

Becoming a Fearless Girl in NYC

I woke up to an alarm going off at 6 a.m. WHAT was going on???? I didn’t set an alarm and I was on vacation! Of course, as soon as I was awake, excitement overtook me and I was ready to see the city. It was a free day, so my adventures in the City began. It was cool and still drizzly outside, but I could feel the sun would pop out soon. I knew where my destination was, but had really no clue on how to get there. I just walked, looking at whatever I felt like. I passed the New York City Public Library, then finally got to Grand Central Station. I hadn’t ridden a subway in 15 years and really had no idea what to do.

I went down into the train area like I knew what I was doing. Someone was friendly enough to tell me which train would take me close to the 9/11 Memorial. This was always going to be my first destination. I had been in NYC in 2002 just months after 9/11, and saw the destruction it left at Ground Zero. I needed to go back for some kind of closure to that. I hopped on the train and was off. I then heard, “Brooklyn Bridge”. Thinking I was going into Brooklyn, I decided to hop off at the next stop, which ended up being 14th and Union Square. I left the subway station to hit the street and had no clue where I was. I am telling you now, Google Maps is USELESS in NYC. I can’t tell you how many times it had me turned around.

Finally realizing I had no idea where I was, I decided to get a cab. The cabbie got me to the Memorial and I just stared a minute. Where there had been nothing more than the destruction of buildings and lives who had perished, stood a small park. I slowly walked toward it with anticipation and almost dread. I came up on the North Pool. It was beautiful in a very haunting way. I stood looking and listening to the water fall over the walls for a long time. Then I touched the names. Immediately the energy of everything that happened there hit me like a brick. I was overcome with intense sorrow. I looked around at people taking pictures and selfies, smiling. I couldn’t imagine even trying to smile right then. I walked further and saw a single white rose rising from the name of one of those lost that a day. Maria Jakubiak. I thought of the loved one that put that there and how the pain never ended. I had to step back. I have heard that the museum was amazing, but after the unsettling energy that the Pools gave me, I couldn’t bring myself to go in. I decided to move on. I took one last look and said a prayer. Maria and the thousands of others….We will not forget.

I passed old churches and cemeteries that I wondered in and out of and then I was on Wall Street. There was the bull! I moved on to Battery Park. I wanted to see Our Lady Liberty. I walked around Battery Park, out toward the Bay, and there she was, seemingly so tiny out there. The Statue of Liberty who welcomed so many into this great country. I had to take a pic with Kelar’s favorite Pokemon card, per his request. He had me on a hunt for Statue of Liberty silly putty as his souvenir (I can tell you now, I never found it and was asked several times if the was something “new”). I walked back up Wall Street and saw the “Fearless Girl”. Since I was taking on NYC on my own, I was feeling pretty fearless and took a selfie with her. My publisher had asked me to lunch in Rockefeller Center, so I decided it was time to head back to Upper Manhattan. Google got me lost again, but on my walk there, I passed St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was beautiful! Had a wonderful lunch with my publisher, in Rockefeller Center, right where they ice skate in the winter. Beautiful day and great company! Perfect! After lunch, I headed back to the hotel. I spent the rest of the evening just exploring Times Square. I saw my girl Wonder Woman’s...huge shout out on the Times Square billboards. But by that point, I was feeling like my own version of Wonder Woman! - Cari

NYC…here I come!

Leg one. On my way to Kansas City. A little nervous, a lot excited, and no clue what the next few days would hold. I had on my flamingo dress, so I was dressed for success! We board the plane and as the wheels went up, my excitement only grew. We landed in Chicago and I spent the next eight hours roaming Midway Airport due to three delays. My patience was thinning, but my anticipation only grew. Ah, 4:30 rolled around, and we started to board! Finally, I was off to NYC!

I touched down in Newark, New Jersey, to a drizzly night. I guess this is as good as time as any to admit I brought enough clothes to last a month and eleven pair of shoes. Some say I overpack, I just feel I am prepared for any situation. So, I drug everything out and hailed a cab. I was headed to the Row NYC in Manhattan. I checked in and “Junior” told me he couldn’t imagine me staying in a standard room for five nights and upgraded me to a room with a partial view of Broadway! I headed up to the room and flung open the door to my upgraded fancy NYC hotel room. I stood there and laughed as I am pretty sure my college dorm room was bigger. I dropped the luggage and ran to the window and there it was, my partial view of Broadway streaming through the, well, very dirty, window. It was about 10 p.m. at that point, so what did I think was a good idea???? EXPLORE!!!!! I was in New York City! I had to see the lights!

I headed out again and it was raining slightly. I got my bearings and turned toward the Great White Way. Excitement building, I kept going and then there I was. Times Square. The entire block was lit up in flashing lights. HELLO, YOU BIG BEAUTIFUL CITY! I sillily spun in a circle in the Middle of Times Square. I AM HERE!!!!!!!! I just stood there a bit, drinking it in. Feeling the energy of the city already running through me. I made it. -Cari

7 Days – 7 Healthy Tips – Day 7

Only 1 more day until you meet author Michelle Mansfield!

at BookCon Health and Wellness Panel, Sunday June 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Here is Tip #7 on improving the health, energy and vitality of your family from Holistic Health Coach and author, Michelle Mansfield...

Dr. Sears has taught me this simple but very important tip - eat a BRAINY BREAKFAST! You might say you’re not hungry for breakfast, your child won’t eat breakfast, or you’re just too rushed. Dr. Sears educates about the essential need for the right breakfast for you -  and especially your kids. Think about it, when your child wakes, they haven’t eaten in about 12 hours. Their body has been in fasting-mode where they need to be in re-charging mode. Then they are off to school where they won’t eat until lunch. That would be about 15 hours without fuel in their body. What to eat? The focus needs to be on healthy protein for breakfast. Add in a healthy fat or whole grain as well. These foods will be their fuel and won’t burn fast like overly processed sugary cereals, muffins, or any thing that isn’t whole grain. Try a whole grain waffle with a nut butter. Sliced apples with a cheese stick and some almonds. Scramble an egg in 2 minutes and serve with sprouted grain toast. If they love avocado, spread that on whole grain toast. Enjoy! Your child's brain will thank you!

7 Days – 7 Healthy Tips – Day 6

Only 2 more days until you meet author Michelle Mansfield!

at BookCon Health and Wellness Panel, Sunday June 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Here is Tip #16on improving the health, energy and vitality of your family from Holistic Health Coach and author, Michelle Mansfield...

Omega-3s are a brain's best friend!

Fish! You may be saying “My child won’t eat fish” but the trick is to keep serving it and start with some milder fish like wild-caught cod. I simply season with lemon, dill, and salt and my daughter, Brooklyn, loves it. Those Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function and growth!

Full-fat plain yogurt. If you can find grass-fed, even better (more Omega-3s). Fat is essential for the brain to grow and perform at its best. I let Brooklyn be the chef and creator of her yogurt. Some berries, chopped cashews, a drizzle of her farmer’s honey, and even some chia seeds (MORE Omega-3s!) on top. It’s pretty, delicious AND will fuel her brain!

7 Days – 7 Healthy Tips – Day 5

3 more days until you meet author Michelle Mansfield!

at BookCon Health and Wellness Panel, Sunday June 4 at 3:30 p.m.

Here is Tip #5 on improving the health, energy and vitality of your family from Holistic Health Coach and author, Michelle Mansfield...

Clearing your mind to regain your focus and calm is as easy and fun as playing with water, a balloon and a stuffed animal!

Here are several really fun and easy mind-calming methods you and your family can use on those stressful days! These methods were taught to me by my friend, Sandy Dixon. www.sandydixon.net

  • Play with water especially when emotions are high. Sandy Dixon, my friend and our meditation instructor, taught Brooklyn to "show me what angry water looks like...sad water...and happy water". Let your child play as long as they want in and with the water. This soothes the nervous system and allows for better attentional focus afterwards. After all, our bodies are made up of about 60% water. So we crave water in all forms - for drinking, playing, focusing and relaxing!
  •  Balloons! Using long, smooth breaths, have your child blow the blown-up balloon across the table or floor until they have regained some focus.
  • Try deep breathing with a favorite stuffed animal on your belly! Have your child on his/her back and put their favorite stuffed friend on their belly (you can grab one too and join them!) As you breathe in and out, watch the movement of the animal. At first you may exaggerate your breathing, which is just fine. Eventually, the breath becomes effortless and creates relaxation on a physiological and emotional level.
